Gordon elected president of healthcare volunteer group
BELFAST — Sandra Gordon, community relations coordinator at Waldo County General Hospital, was recently installed as president for the Maine Society Directors of Healthcare Volunteer Services for a two-year term.
Betty Walker is MHA Caregiver of the Year
A woman who became Cary Medical Center’s “chief entertainment officer,” and, more formally, the director of volunteer services, has been selected as the Maine Hospital Association’s 2011 Caregiver of the Year.
Kathy Berube receives NEADHVS President’s Award
Kathy received the President’s Award at the NEADHVS spring conference in RI for her Ambassador Program at Maine Medical Center.
Judi Trenholm receives Maine Society DOVE Award
The DOVE Award recognizes a Maine DVS who demonstrates leadership qualities at the local, state, regional or national levels, and in the management and use of volunteers in his/her institution. Judi is DVS and Gift Shop Manager at Pen Bay Medical Center, Rockport. She has been a Maine Society member five years, and volunteered to accept the position of by-laws chair two years ago, as well as helped update the Maine Society administrative manual, a valuable resource for our organization.

New member Lorna Hatch was selected as the new Chief, Voluntary Service, at the VA Center at Togus effective 6/19/11, replacing Steve Hurd. Congratulations, Lorna! Lorna has worked in the department for many years and it’s nice to see that she is recognized for her years of service.

High Tea for Staff: A Unique Way of Caring for the Caregiver
Hasbro Children’s Hospital, the pediatric division of Rhode Island Hospital, has implemented a unique volunteer program: targeting staff as the customer. Within the program, a volunteer provides a High Tea, complete with its formal protocols, china tea cups and scones to staff at the hospital.

NEW ENGLAND AWARD FOR PROFESSIONAL EXCELLENCE (NEAPE Award)

"Case" Study in Compassion: Lawrence & Memorial Hospital Volunteer Sewing Group Stitch Together Tokens of Comfort for Hospital Pediatric Patients
For some, sewing is a hobby. For Lorraine Turnquist, Vicki Yale and Josephine Gangitano, it’s a mission. The three L&M volunteers meet once a week in the basement of the hospital’s "c" building to sew pillow cases for L&M’s pediatric patients.
Certified Administrator of Volunteer Services
CCVA has recently assumed management of the CAVS (Certified Administrator of Volunteer Services) certification, a program especially for leaders of volunteers in healthcare settings.

Congratulations to Sandy Marshall for her election to the AHVRP Board of Directors. Sandy will serve a 3 year term strengthening New England’s presence on the national level. Sandy will join Mary Rahaim as a board member at large as Kelley Boothby’s term ends. Congratulations Sandy.

Michelle Caruso, CAVS is the recipient of the 2009 NEAPE Award. Michelle joins a prestigious group of Award winners including Pat Rowell, Massachusetts General Hospital, Joe Dooley, CAVS Bedford VA Hospital, Sandy Cranford, CAVS, Maine Medical Center, and Millie Stewart, Mid Coast Hospital.

The second annual Team of Stars awards were presented at the NEADHVS Spring Conference this year.
This award is given to members of NEADHVS whose commitment to the organization is exceptional. The award recipients are chosen by the present and former NEADHVS Presidents for service.
