Hasbro Children’s Hospital, the pediatric division of Rhode Island Hospital, has implemented a unique volunteer program: targeting staff as the customer. Within the program, a volunteer provides a High Tea, complete with its formal protocols, china tea cups and scones to staff at the hospital.
The idea originated from a desire to do something for the staff who is continually dealing with very ill children and their families. The Director of Pediatric Services had heard about a similar program elsewhere, and when she approached Vickie Scott, the Pediatric Volunteer Coordinator, with the concept, Vickie knew just who fit the task! A retired employee had been sharing his love of English teas with departments while he worked at the hospital. Now recruited as a volunteer, the Hasbro Tea was born!
The program is coordinated with Child Life and each month a different department is selected to receive a high tea. The volunteer brings all the supplies, sets up and orchestrates this formal social activity, usually in the staff lounge or conference room. It is structured so that staff can come as their schedule permits within a given timeframe.
The goal is to hit every patient unit and department in the Children’s Hospital. So far 3 inpatient units have received their tea. Once the Inpatient Units are done, the outpatient clinics and Emergency Room will be serviced. Already, a few departments dealing with a particulary difficult time for staff have requested a tea. It is expected that it will take a year to reach all departments.
The program cost @ $25 per tea for the pastries, cream and related supplies. The funding is provided through the Child Life program at Hasbro. With the success and popularity of the program, Vickie is looking to secure funding to purchase the china and reusable supplies to maintain and grow the program.
